Hermes did it before with their Kelly and Birkin bags, and now it’s time for you to dip your toes in the glittery ocean of handbag design with Gucci’s Cut & Craft campaign, a new online initiative that allows customers and fans to download patterns of three of the label’s hottest pieces and create a personal design that will be showcased on the brand’s Facebook page.

Customers can choose among the Jackie, the Bamboo and the Stirrup to craft their customised design and highlight their creativity to stand out on Gucci’s burgeoning social media outlet. The highest honour one can get from joining this contest is having their design featured in the cover photo of Gucci’s Facebook page.

But unless you’re aiming to become a social media superstar with a forte in paper handbag design, it’s not a lot of incentive for the amount of work and ingenuity you have to put in to get noticed among the flurry of submissions, no?

Shouldn’t Gucci at least create a limited edition design for the winning entry? If it’s too much work for just one bag they can even create a limited edition of the design to make some money as well, perhaps that would make the case a bit more compelling.
