If there is something worth aspiring for – and worth investing in – we believe that it has to be something won a Christie’s auction. Christie’s is a name and place that speaks of extraordinary art, unparalleled service and expertise, as well as international glamour.
It offers over 450 sales annually in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewellery, photographs, collectibles, wine, and more. Last year, its global auction and private sales has totaled £2.1 billion ($3.3 billion). This year, as the leading auction house pursues new and emerging markets, it continues its season with the Christie’s 9th series of public exhibitions and sales in Dubai from 24th-27th October. Christie’s has announced that the sale of the largest private collection of jewellery “parures” will come to auction on 27 October 2010 in Dubai.
Christie’s October 27 sale offers 41 examples of parures. Never before has such a number been offered for sale at auction. All are signed by Chatila, Jahan and Mouawad. Each lot consists of earrings, a ring, a matching necklace and bracelet and will be accompanied by a certificate from its maker. Estimates range from $40,000 to $400,000 and all lots will be offered without reserve. This is somehow a good estimate since in 2006, it showcased the Gulf pearl parure by Harry Winston, which subsequently sold in Geneva for a record price of $4.1 million.
Priceless treasures sure they are, we cannot get hold of our imagination on how the Jumeirah Emirates Tower’s Hotel will be ablaze with these sumptuous suites of jewellery, set with a total of 2,180 carats of rubies, 1,970 carats of emeralds, 1,630 carats of sapphires and 6,460 carats of diamonds. We’re vouching that the view will definitely be breathtaking especially with the following sets of must-have jewelleries:
Viewing is open to the public at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel from Sunday 24 October (2pm to 10pm), Monday 25 October (2pm to 10pm) and Tuesday 26 October (10am to 1.30pm). Christie’s auction of Jewels and Watches – The Dubai Sale, takes place at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel on Wednesday, 27 Ocotber 2010 at 7pm.
Also happening is Christie’s auction of International Modern and Contemporary Art at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel on 26 October 2010 at 7pm. The covetable artworks include the outstanding group of modern paintings from the collection of Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi, the first Lord Mayor of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, works by artists Mahmoud Said, Abdul Hadi El Gazzar and Hamed Nada.

If you’re lost in jewellery jargon, the word “parure” refers to a set of three or more matching pieces of jewellery, traditionally consisting of a necklace, bracelet, ring and a pair of earrings. The name was first applied in the 17th century although the fashion of matching suites of jewellery extends far further back, over 5,000 years, to Ancient Egypt and Rome, where women adorned themselves with sets of jewellery.
During the Neo-classical period (1760-1830), Napoleon Bonaparte was infamously known for lavishing expensive parures on the ladies of his court, predominantly for his first wife Empress Josephine and later for his second wife Empress Marie-Louise.
A century later in the late 1950s, iconic Hollywood actresses such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe inspired a resurgence in the fashion-world’s love of parures both off and on screen. In Elizabeth Taylor’s most famous role, Cleopatra wears a collection of exquisite parures reflecting ancient Egyptian styles. Most recently the Royal Families of Europe gathered for the wedding of H.R.H., Princess Victoria of Sweden to Daniel Westling. Many wore their suites of jewellery which were met with great admiration.
